How to Install Hardie Board on Shower Walls

Hardie board is a cement-based fiberboard that is becoming increasingly popular for use in shower walls. It is a durable and low-maintenance material that can be installed relatively easily. Here are the steps on how to put up Hardie board in shower walls:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Hardie board
  • Cement backer board screws
  • Cement backer board adhesive
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk
  • Grinder
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask

Step 1: Prepare the Walls

The first step is to prepare the walls for the Hardie board. This involves removing any existing drywall, tile, or other materials. The walls should be smooth and free of any debris.

Step 2: Install the Backer Board

Next, you will need to install the cement backer board. This will provide a solid base for the Hardie board. The backer board should be cut to size and installed using cement backer board screws. Make sure that the backer board is level and secure.

Step 3: Apply the Adhesive

Once the backer board is installed, you can apply the cement backer board adhesive to the back of the Hardie board. Be sure to apply the adhesive evenly and in a thick layer.

Step 4: Install the Hardie Board

Now you can install the Hardie board. Start by placing the bottom edge of the board against the floor. Then, use a level to make sure that the board is plumb. Secure the board to the wall using cement backer board screws. Repeat this process for the remaining Hardie boards.

Step 5: Caulk the Joints

Once the Hardie board is installed, you need to caulk the joints between the boards. This will help to prevent water from seeping into the walls. Use a caulking gun to apply a bead of caulk to the joints. Then, smooth out the caulk using your finger or a caulk tool.

Step 6: Finish the Wall

The final step is to finish the wall. This may involve painting the Hardie board, installing tile, or another type of finish. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for finishing the Hardie board.

Additional Tips:

  • Wear safety glasses and a dust mask when cutting and installing Hardie board.
  • Use a grinder to smooth out any rough edges on the Hardie board.
  • Make sure that the Hardie board is properly sealed to prevent water damage.
