How to Measure for Shower Door Installation

When it comes to shower door installation, taking accurate measurements is crucial for ensuring a perfect fit and optimal functionality. Whether you're replacing an existing door or installing a new one, precise measurements will guide your installation process and prevent any costly mistakes.

Here's a comprehensive guide on how to measure for shower door installation:

Step 1: Determine the Opening Type

The first step is to identify the type of shower opening you have. There are two main types:

  • Recessed Opening: The shower is recessed into the wall, creating a niche for the shower door.
  • Alcove Opening: The shower is enclosed on three sides by walls, leaving one side open for the door.

Step 2: Measure the Width and Height

Using a measuring tape, measure the width of the shower opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest measurement as the width of your shower door. Measure the height of the opening from the top of the curb or threshold to the ceiling. Again, record the smallest measurement as the height of the shower door.

Step 3: Measure the Opening Angle (for Neo-Angle Doors)

If you have a neo-angle shower, you need to measure the opening angle. Place the protractor in the corner of the opening and align the zero line with one of the walls. Read the measurement where the other wall intersects the protractor.

Step 4: Allow for Clearance

When ordering your shower door, it's important to allow for clearance for the door to swing open and close freely. Add 1/4 inch to the width and height measurements for standard doors and 1/2 inch for frameless doors.

Step 5: Measure for Hinges and Handles

Determine the desired location of the hinges and handles on the door. This will depend on the type of shower door you choose. Measure the distance from the top and side of the door to the center of the hinges and handles.

Step 6: Measure for Sill or Track

If you're installing a sliding shower door, you need to measure the sill or track. Measure the length of the sill or track and the width of the opening where the track will be installed.

Additional Tips:

  • Use a laser level to ensure that the shower opening is level and square.
  • Double-check your measurements before submitting them for ordering.
  • If possible, consult with a professional installer for accurate measurements and expert guidance.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you have accurate measurements for your shower door installation. Proper measurements will not only prevent any installation issues but also enhance the aesthetics and functionality of your shower.
